Multidimensional poverty indices

چکیده
This paper explores the axiomatic foundation of multidimensional poverty indices. Departing from the income approach which measures poverty by aggregating shortfalls of incomes from a predetermined poverty-line income, a multidimensional index is a numerical representation of shortfalls of basic needs from some pre-speci®ed minimum levels. The class of subgroup consistent poverty indices introduced by Foster and Shorrocks (1991) is generalized to the multidimensional context. New concepts necessary for the design of distribution-sensitive multidimensional poverty measures are introduced. Speci®c classes of subgroup consistent multidimensional poverty measures are derived based on sets of reasonable axioms. This paper also highlights the fact that domain restrictions may have a critical role in the design of multidimensional indices.

Chronic Multidimensional Poverty or Multidimensional Chronic Deprivation
In the wake of the renewed interest in multidimensional poverty measurement, a natural question arising is how and whether indices of multidimensional poverty can be adapted to produce measures that quantify both the joint incidence of multiple deprivations and their degree of persistence, i.e. their chronicity. In this paper we seek to build one bridge between these two literatures (on multidi...
متن کاملMeasuring Chronic Multidimensional Poverty: A Counting Approach
How can indices of multidimensional poverty be adapted to produce measures that quantify both the joint incidence of multiple deprivations and their chronicity? This paper adopts a new approach to the measurement of chronic multidimensional poverty. It relies on the counting approach of Alkire and Foster (2011) for the measurement of multidimensional poverty in each time period and then on the ...
متن کاملPoverty rankings of opportunity profiles
We address the problem of ranking distributions of opportunity sets in terms of poverty. In order to accomplish this task, we identify a suitable notion of ‘multidimensional poverty line’ and we characterize axiomatically several poverty rankings of opportunity profiles. Among them, the Head-Count and the OpportunityGap poverty rankings, which are the natural counterparts of the most widely use...
متن کاملde Travail du Centre d ’ Economie de la Sorbonne Coherent Multidimensional Poverty Measurement
This paper presents a family of multidimensional poverty indices that measure poverty as a function of the extent and the intensity of poverty. I provide a unique axiomatics from which both extent and intensity of poverty can be derived, as well as the poor be endogenously identified. This axiomatics gives rise to a family of multidimensional indices whose extremal points are the geometric mean...
متن کاملMultidimensional poverty measurement with individual preferences∗
We propose a new class of multidimensional poverty indices. Aggregation of the different dimensions relies on individual preferences. The Pareto principle is, therefore, satisfied among the poor. The indices add up individual measures of poverty that are computed as a convex transform of the fraction of the poverty line vector to which the agent is indifferent. The axiomatic characterization of...
